Recycling isn't a new concept.

A recent paper by XXXXXXXX published in WRAP, that survival of the nation was avoided by circular economy.


Before the times of social media and mobile phones, millions of pamphlets were circulated instructing households to separate and recycle their waste. At domestic level the circulation of the 'here's what you do to help' highlighted to households how paper, rubber, metals scrap and bones can help the war effort. The tagline was: 'Every scrap helps towards victory'.

Segregation inot designated bins well before they popped up in the 70s and 80s. Metal dustbins were used to collect Metal, paper, rubber, food and even bones.


             'Britain is menaced, we are cut off for a time from

certain countries which used to send us imported materials.

We can no longer afford to bring from overseas one

single ounce of everything that can be produced

or saved at home'



Indeed these scrap items help us build bomber planes.


Scrap metal was used for: Machine guns, and cannon shells.

Waste paper was used for: Bomb washers, engine gaskets and containers.

Waste rubber was used for: Wheels, rubber dingeys, life jackets

Waste bones were used for : Glycerin for explosives/
